Description

Aquamarine, traditional birthstone of March, has long been tied to the sea. Using stone as talismans for protection and safe travel sailors from past generations believed these charmed gems were from mermaids. Aquamarine is also associated with quieting the mind—thus a wonderful stone for meditation. It always gives me the feeling of higher guidance, clarity of path, and overall tranquility. This beautifully soft and powerfully soothing piece features roundish nuggets of light blue Aquamarine that range in size ever so slightly. Finished with a Tibetan Silver Lotus Flower Bead that is perched above a handmade Blue/Grey tassel this truly one-of-a-kind Mala is knotted with the same subtle, yet sharp cotton cord.

Typically Malas contain 108 beads separated by hand-tied knots. They often feature a 109th bead referred to as a Guru Stone and may or may not include a tassel. Materials include wooden beads, a variety of seeds, stones, glass, clay or even carved bone. There are two great posts already by Daniel Sharpenburg and Nyk Danu that go into much more detail, just click on their names to link.

Using semiprecious stones and wood in my work, the designs are often simple in an effort to highlight the features of each unique stone, or wood grain. Semiprecious stones carry their own lore and traditions that cross generations, and cultures and are often said to carry unique meta-physical properties. I’d like to introduce you to a recent creation and share some of its stones’ meanings.
